A.P. INDIAN CAPTURES SECOND STRAIGHT LE VINE MEMORIAL

Green Lantern Stables’ A.P. Indian shook off repeated challenges from the stubborn Roxbury N Overton before pulling away through the final eighth of a mile to win Saturday’s running of the $100,000 Don Le Vine Memorial Stakes at Parx. It was the second straight win in the Le Vine for the six year-old gelded son of Indian Charlie who captured the race last year in an almost identical fashion.

Breaking from the inside gate under winning jockey Joe Bravo, A.P. Indian came away well in the field of five and despite outside pressure from Roxbury N Overton, led the way through the opening quarter mile in 22.70. Leading by only a half-length through much of the first half mile, A.P. Indian ran past the three-eighths pole after turning a half in 44.80 and still was flanked by his main rival who was now being asked to go up and engage the leader in earnest. Roxbury N Overton got to the neck of A.P. Indian rounding the far turn, but he simply would never get by.

Coming off the turn, A.P. Indian cut the corner and opened up a full length lead and then slowly increased that advantage through the final furlong to go on to win the race by a solid three lengths at the finish. Sent off as a heavy 3-5 favorite, A.P. Indian, trained by Arnaud Delacour, paid $3.20, 2.20 and 2.10. Roxbury N Overton (5-2 second choice) came into the race riding a four race winning streak, but simply couldn’t match strides late with the winner. He stayed on well for second and paid 2.40 and 2.20. Rockinn on Bye (10-1) never posed a threat to the top two, but did manage to out finish the others for third and paid 3.00 to show. The final time for the seven furlongs over a track labeled fast was 1:22.30.
