The first ever running of the $75,000 Parx Derby went to Crossed Sabres Farm’s Bluegrass Singer. The three year-old gelded son of Bluegrass Cat got a beautiful trip under jockey Tammi Piermarini, stalking long shot pace setter Mr. Discreet before making a move with three furlongs to run. He quickly opened a three length lead on his two main rivals, Unrivaled and Don’tbetwithbruno and then held on through the stretch to win by three-quarters of a length. Trained by Marcus Vitali and off as the even money favorite, Bluegrass Singer paid $4.20 to win and finished the one and seventy yards in 1:45.08.
The thriller of the day was the $75,000 Lyman Stakes for PA-bred three year-olds and up. Kobel had done all the running, Yougotthatgoingforu had a great inside trip behind the speed, and A Fleet Attitude made the big run from off the pace. With a furlong to go, there was nothing to separate those three. Kobel dug in gamely on the rail, Yougotthatgoingforu battled tooth-and-nail between horses and A Fleet Attitude rallied on the outside. As the three came to the wire together, A Fleet Attitude put his head in front and earned himself a hard fought and well deserved first stakes victory. Owned by Briardale Stable and trained by Richard Vega, the five year-old gelded son of Afleet Alex went off at 6-1 under jockey Angel Castillo and paid $15.20 to win. He ran the seven furlongs in 1:24.09.
Gainesway Stable’s Danzatrice put in the performance of the day winning the $75,000 Parx Oaks convincingly beating Grade 1 winner By the Moon. Danzatrice, a Dunkirk filly going long for the first time for trainer Cal Lynch sat fifth in the early stages before going up to tackle By the Moon after she had seized the lead with three-eighths to go. Taking the lead turning for home, Danzatrice quickly began to draw away and was wrapped up at the end winning by a final margin of just over four lengths. Ridden by Trevor McCarthy, she covered the mile and seventy faster than her male counterparts did an hourly earlier, finishing out in 1:44.3. Off at 5-1, she paid $13.80 to win.
The $75,000 Foxy J G Stakes, the ladies version of the Lyman, saw James Courtney’s Power of Snunner blow past the front runners in mid-stretch and win going away. Racing in mid-pack early on, the five year-old Power by Far mare made a big surge with an eighth to go and pulled away impressively to win by four and a quarter lengths. Trained by Tim Kreiser and ridden by Mathew Rispoli, she was off at 3-1 and paid $8.00 to win. The time for the seven eighths was 1:24.52.
